Building the Consulting Businesses

of the Next Decade.

Building the Consulting Businesses of the Next Decade.

The model that built many specialist consulting and technology businesses won't be enough for what comes next.

Godwin Austen helps leadership teams create commercial momentum today while strengthening the business for tomorrow by adapting how they sell, operate and deliver as AI changes the economics of expertise.

Built by founders, operators and specialists, we bring together advisory, commercial execution, workforce capability, technology, AI and automation around your growth constraints.

How Growth Starts

to Break Down in

Specialist Businesses.

In most specialist firms, the commercial and operating systems struggle to keep up as you scale.

These are the most common signs

that growth is stalling.

Revenue Concentration

Revenue is dependent on a handful of clients and senior people.

Poor Commercial Visibility

Leadership can see headline pipeline and revenue, but not enough of what is driving performance, where risk sits or whether the underlying information can be trusted.

Limited Market Activity

The business is not creating enough new conversations beyond referrals, partners and existing relationships.

Reactive Hiring

Hiring and capacity decisions get made once the pressure is already visible. Expensive people get added in a rush or delivery gets stretched thin while the right hire is still being found.

Founder Dependency

The founder is responsible for most major decisions, business development, networking and relationships.

Accountability Gaps

Senior people are experienced and capable, but decisions, priorities and commercial accountability are unclear, so the founder ends up stepping back in whenever progress stalls.

Grow Today,

Build for Tomorrow.

Most of the firms we support need commercial progress today and a stronger business behind that growth to carry it into the future.

Grow Today

  • Identify the markets, accounts and buying journeys worth pursuing

  • Sharpen the proposition and make complex expertise easier to buy

  • Create more conversations through consistent outbound and account development, rather than relying on referrals, partners and existing relationships

  • Give leadership a reliable view of activity, account progress, pipeline and forecast

  • Add execution capacity without automatically adding more local overhead

build for TOMORROW

  • Redesign the operating model around the next stage of the business

  • Decide which work needs people, AI, automation or a different delivery model

  • Reduce dependency on founders, rainmakers and individual client relationships

  • Turn expertise into reusable IP, tools and delivery models

  • Strengthen leadership, accountability, scalability and long-term value

Combining Capabilities Around Your Constraints.

A combination of capabilities is built around the specific areas restricting growth in your business. The model follows the problem, not the other way around.

Built for Cross-Sector Specialist Businesses.

A Data & Analytics firm may have different problems to a Wealth Management or Engineering company, yet most businesses share the same underlying challenges to growth and long-term sustainability.

The models for high-trust firms delivering complex solutions and services is shifting no matter which sector you operate within, so we adapt our expertise and capabilities to cover your unique industry challenges and set you up for growth in the wider market.

A Starting Point That Fits.

The best place to start is with the problem you need to solve now.

That might be a single focused review, ongoing support in one area or a broader change across the business.

Godwin Austen starts wherever the pressure actually is and expands from there.

In Practice

From Uncertain Demand to a More Predictable Commercial Model.

Oxford Summer Courses needed greater visibility and control over demand. In 2022, around 600 summer beds remained unsold, representing approximately £600,000 of committed capacity.

We helped strengthen the commercial operating model around Salesforce, connecting sales, marketing and delivery more effectively while improving qualification, pipeline discipline and forecasting.

By 2023, every planned bed had been sold and the business was able to source additional capacity with greater confidence in demand.

The project created a stronger commercial data environment and a more structured approach to forecasting ahead of the company’s eventual exit in 2025.

In Practice

Opening Strategic Accounts Beyond the Existing Network.

A specialist technical consultancy had built a strong reputation in a high-value, expertise-led market.

But growth remained heavily dependent on senior relationships, while large contracts created additional pressure around capacity, client concentration and cash flow.

We helped the business take a more deliberate approach to strategic account development.

Rather than waiting for relationships or referrals to open new markets, the team used structured outbound activity to create conversations with major target organisations that had previously been difficult to access.

This helped strengthen pipeline structure and the discipline around commercial meetings, and the business was subsequently acquired by a major global consulting organisation.

Making The Unknown Knowable.

Godwin Austen takes its name from Henry Haversham Godwin-Austen, the nineteenth-century surveyor, scientist and explorer who helped map some of the world’s least understood terrain and gave people a way to navigate it.

Inspired by his approach, we set out to make the unknown knowable for consulting and technology businesses facing the unmapped terrain of the market today.

Businesses are navigating AI, new competitors, changing buying behaviour, different operating models and new ways of organising expertise.

Our role is to help clients see what is happening, understand what it means and build a practical response.

Find the Constraint & Decide What to Fix First.

The most important growth problems often span several capabilities.

A weak pipeline may begin with an unclear proposition. Poor reporting may expose a deeper problem with data, CRM discipline or management while a capacity problem may require automation rather than another hire.

We identify where the problem begins, then bring the combination that actually fixes it.

An introductory conversation with Godwin Austen will help you:

  • Identify where growth is being held back

  • Understand how that constraint is affecting the wider business

  • Decide where to focus first

FAQs.

Who works with clients?

Each engagement has a named Godwin Austen lead who remains accountable for the work. Additional operators, advisers or specialists are brought in where the problem requires their experience.

The team is selected around the work rather than around a fixed consulting bench.

Where do you normally start?

We start with the constraint creating the greatest commercial or operating resistance.

That may sit in demand, qualification, leadership, delivery, workforce capability or the wider operating model.

The first step is to understand the evidence and agree where change is likely to have the greatest practical effect.

Do we need to use all of your capabilities?

No.

A client may need a focused sales engagement, an operating-model review, marketing support, additional workforce capability or a combination of several areas.

The model follows the problem.

Why do good sales hires sometimes fail in consulting businesses?

A strong salesperson still needs the right environment around them.

If the proposition is unclear, qualification is weak, pipeline data cannot be trusted and sales, marketing and delivery are disconnected, even an experienced salesperson is being asked to perform without the infrastructure required to succeed.

The business needs to build the system, not simply hire the person.

Why does founder dependency matter?

It creates a capacity problem and a transferability problem.

If relationships, decisions and expertise remain concentrated with the founder, growth is limited by one person's availability and the business becomes harder for a leadership team, investor or future buyer to operate without them.

Why should demand come before adding capability?

Specialist people are expensive and often hard to find.

Building credible demand first gives the business more evidence about where growth is likely to come from and what skills and capacity it will genuinely require.

That reduces the risk of adding cost first and searching for enough work afterwards.

Does growth always mean hiring more people?

No.

Some requirements justify a permanent hire. Others may suit remote or interim capability, a Delivered service or an AI-enabled workflow.

We start with the work, then decide the most effective way to get it done.

How is this different from hiring an agency or recruiter?

An agency or recruiter normally works within an existing brief.

Godwin Austen can help determine whether the brief itself is right, then bring together the strategy, commercial system, people, technology and delivery capability required around it.

Do you only work with EPM and data-led technology businesses?

No.

EPM, data and analytics feature heavily in our operating experience, but our expertise also extends across engineering and technical consulting, wealth management, AV and workplace technology and cybersecurity.

The common thread is a business built around specialist expertise, a complex or trust-led buying journey and a growth model that can no longer depend primarily on the founder.

How does AI change the consulting growth model?

AI changes more than productivity.

It allows firms to reconsider which work genuinely requires experienced people, which activities can be automated or accelerated and how expertise can be delivered more efficiently.

Over time, that affects workforce design, pricing, delivery models, margins, commercial execution and the role of senior people.

The bigger opportunity is to redesign the operating model around what is becoming possible.

What happens after the introductory call?

The call is used to understand the situation, test whether Godwin Austen is a good fit and identify the most useful next step.

That may be a deeper diagnostic, a defined advisory engagement or direct support through one or more capabilities.
